South African president backflips over $32m spend on home

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has agreed to repay the South African government part of the $32 million spent on extensive improvements to his home.

Mr Zuma had previously ignored a 2014 finding - by the Public Protector, Thulisile Madonsela - he had misappropriated government funds, allowed excessive billing and "benefited unduly" from the renovations.

At one stage Mr Zuma told parliament he had paid for the works.

Critics of the President have labelled his backflip as a public admission of corruption.
