Youths recover after fatal crash
ONE of the two youths injured in a double fatal road crash on Friday has been discharged from hospital.
Gunther Barwick of Yamba was in a Holden Commodore that struck another Commodore at Tabbimoble, south of New Italy, killing the two occupants.
His companion Travis McDonagh, 17, who was believed to be driving, remains in Lismore Base Hospital in a satisfactory condition.
The deceased couple, a husband and wife aged 61 and 64, have not yet been named.
The two Maclean High School students are thought to have been travelling north when they crossed over into the southbound lane and crashed into the oncoming vehicle.
Police investigations are ongoing and no charges have been laid at this stage.
Gunther Barwick posted his profile on a social networking website in August last year. He describes himself as a surfer, with ambitions in sport or in photography.
His ‘local inspirations’ include ‘Freddy Flinstone’ and ‘Spongebob Squarepants’, he wrote. His favourite book and film are from the Harry Potter series.
“My life is: mixed up,” he notes.
He also posted the following comments last year: “Had a crazy weekend crashed our car nearly got bashed at macdonalds friend got fined $300 for drinking. one bender of a week end.”
Friday’s accident occurred in wet conditions at a notorious stretch of the Pacific Highway.
There were five deaths on NSW roads on Friday, and police reported a shocking weekend for P-plate offences.
