Youth may soon counsel council

YOUTH will get to have a say in the Ballina Shire with the council deciding at its April meeting to form a Ballina Youth Council.

Cr Jeff Johnson raised the idea of forming the youth forum, inspired after attending an annual meeting of the Ballina High School Student Representative Council.

“It’s important for youth to be recognised as an important part of our community,” he said. “A lot of times there are just negative images of youth.”

He said a youth council would raise the profile of youth issues in the shire.

And he said the council would provide an educational element for it members, giving them public speaking skills, communication skills, leadership and allowing them to learn about the formal process of meetings.

Shire council staff will prepare a report on the establishment of a youth council.
