Youth centre gets creative helping kids learn life skills

KIDS and teenagers can have fun while learning life skills through practical activities such as beanbag making, oven-building and gardening at B-Space these school holidays. .

The Ballina youth centre, which is undergoing renovations, will run activities every day up until its official re-opening on February 27.

This week youth are making beanbags for the centre's new outdoor cinema, which launches Saturday night with the movie The Croods.

Volunteer youth worker Dean Pearce has been helping kids put their beanbags together.

"They're cutting, measuring, sewing and learning how to follow things through," he said.

"I think it's really important to model good behaviour and to help them through issues they're having."

Youth case manager Steve Bowden said many of the holiday activities were about creating things for the revamped space.

"We're building a woodfire pizza oven in the backyard. We're doing a lot of make-and-do stuff," he said.

"Being part of a larger organisation, a push came to do something more innovative with the youth centre and the services being delivered here.

"This is the beginning of a much more vibrant youth centre and culture in Ballina."

B-Space, formerly called the Ballina Youth Centre, is located on Swift St.

It operates under FSG Australia, an organisation that encourages freedom, social justice and growth.

Registration is free but essential by calling FSG Australia on 6686 7776.
