Young whale freed off Kirra

YET another whale was freed from shark nets on Thursday morning.

A Seaworld spokesman said the eight metre sub-adult humpback, seen tangled off Kirra about 7am, was the fifth or sixth whale rescued in the region this whale season.

He said Seaworld sent a crew down, but a shark net contractor, managed to free the whale five minutes before they arrived.

"There were reports of a mother and calf floating nearby," he said.

The spokesman put the number of entanglements this year down to higher whale numbers.

"Because the migration numbers are increasing, we've seem more whales tangled," he said.

He said the numbers are believed to be about 20,000 this year.
