THE region's top young songwriters will front up to a panel of judges this Thursday, as they unveil their talents in the final showdown of the Young Songwriters' competition at Lismore City Bowling Club.

The free event will feature live performances from the finalists in each music category.

These are pop, folk, urban/electronic, punk/metal and rock/indie.

Winners will be announced on the night.

The judges will award a best male and a best female Songwriter of the Year, as well as the winners and runners up for each category.

Organiser Jennifer Parke, from the Northern Rivers Social Development Council, said the talent was incredible.

"The judges have been meeting and making some tough decisions," she said.

"Now we're all gearing up for the live performances of all the finalists."

The finals performance and awards night is being held to coincide with Youth Week (April 10-19).

Ms Parke said the competition, open to regional young people aged 12-25, was a stepping stone to bigger and brighter things in the competitive world of music.

Previous winners have included Grace Hughes, who performed at this year's Bluesfest, and Ben Wilson, who released his EP Lonely One last year.

She said the finals night was a great chance to see our local rising stars in action.

Head to the Lismore City Bowling Club in Spinks Park, from 6.30pm on Thursday.
