Boy, 8, in critical condition after being left in car

AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy is fighting for his life after reportedly being found trapped in a hot car in Melbourne's southwest.

Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to Maddox Rd in Newport around 2.40pm, after reports of a child trapped in a vehicle.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics treated a child at the scene and took him to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition.

The city has sweltered through a brutally hot spring day with the mercury hitting 33 degrees.

Victoria Police say detectives are investigating after a child was located in a car.

"Emergency services were called when the eight-year-old boy was located unresponsive in a car by one of his parents at about 2.45pm," a police spokesman said.

"The boy was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

"It is unclear at this time how the boy came to be in the car however the incident is not believed to be suspicious at this time."

One resident told the Herald Sun: "It's just a very sad situation."

"I can't imagine what the parents would be going through,'' they said.

"It's sad whichever way it happened - especially when kids are involved."

Another resident said: "First I saw was the ambulance and then a whole heap of police cars."

"I just saw the flashing lights."
