Young gun keen to fire some big shots at state titles

IT MADE sense for 11-year Jackson Magarry to start taking golf seriously four years ago.

After all he lives just across the road from the Lismore Workers Golf Club.

Magarry plays golf six days a week and will represent North Coast at the PSSA state titles next month.

The Lismore Public student started on the Northern Rivers District Gold junior circuit last year and has been a steady improver.

"We moved here about four years ago and I love playing golf," Magarry said.

"I'm really looking forward to this competition and it should be a lot of fun.

"I've definitely improved a lot since I started getting coached, it's been awesome.

"Hopefully, I'll go alright and learn a few things at this competition."

Magarry has been a regular on the Lismore course off and on with his father Anthony since the age of four.

He is coached by Lismore professional Peter Jaeger and has just started playing 18-hole club competition on Saturdays.

"Jason swings the club well and he is very keen," Jaeger said.

"Technique is the key and once he gets a bit more size, he will be able to whack the ball a lot further.

"He doesn't hit too many bad shots and that's pretty impressive for someone his age."

Magarry is part of a young trio who have caught Yaeger's attention in recent months.

Seth McClelland, Jack Robertson and Magarry have all impressed him.

"They are all about the same standard and they feed off each other," he said.

"Its great to coach kids who are keen and having that ability helps.

"Golf is a great sport for young kids, you can't get into too much trouble on the golf course."

The PSSA golf will be held at Port Macquarie on September 9.

Magarry also represented the North Coast PSSA basketball team earlier this year.
