Young Aussie women opt for a healthier start to 2013

MOST young Australian women have put healthier eating on top of their New Year's resolutions list for 2013, a survey for the Dieticians Association of Australia showed on Thursday.

The annual young women's nutrition survey reveals 68% of the 18-24 year-old women surveyed had resolved to eat healthier in 2013.

Of those, 42% were also hoping to lose weight, but the same survey completed last year showed similar results, confirming young women continue to struggle with weight and nutrition issues.

The latest survey also revealed two in three young women tried to lose weight in 2012, with 28% of those surveyed saying lose weight was an ongoing process.

Dietician Melanie McGrice said many young women fell down by setting their nutrition goals too high and then giving up after not reaching the goals.

"The key is making smaller changes for the better and then adopting these changes for life," she said.

Ms McGrice said a healthy diet included different kinds of nutritious every day, breakfast every morning, cooking healthy meals at home, limiting take away and treat foods every now and then.

She said young women looking to shape up in 2013 should aim for a realistic and sustainable weight loss of about 2kg to 4kg a month.

Starter tips for young women wanting to eat better in 2012:

  • Eat breakfast every day
  • Choose foods that are packed with nutrition but low in kilojoules
  • Cook at home more often using healthy ingredients
  • Fill up on vegetables
  • Pack lunch and snacks for work
  • Be portion aware
  • Enjoy treats in moderation
  • Keep a food diary
  • Get the right support
