Yorklea man finds 28cm cane toad

ANDREW BATTISTUZZI could hardly believe his eyes when he found a monster cane toad warming itself in the winter sun near the dam on his Yorklea property last week.

The toxic pest was the size of a house brick.

“I’m sure bigger cane toads have been found, but that’s the largest one we’ve ever seen here,” Mr Battistuzzi said.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw it.

“We’ve lived in this area for the past eight years, but we’ve only started to see cane toads over the past two years.

“We’ve found them right through from golf to cricket ball size, but never one as big is this.”

The cane toad, which Mr Battistuzzi euthanased, measured 28cm in length and was just over 10cm wide.

He fears it may be an indicator the cane toad invasion in the area around Casino is becoming more entrenched.

“You can hear them clearly at night,” he said.

“They have a distinctive sound. It’s like a dial tone on a phone.

“They kill the wildlife and they will poison your pets, too.”
