Yankee Rose tipped to pop the Champagne
The Champagne Stakes is one of the two Group 1 races at Royal Randwick tomorrow and betting suggests Sires Produce Stakes winner Yankee Rose has a mortgage on the race.
She proved far too strong for her rivals in the Sires Produce Stakes following her fast-finishing second in the Golden Slipper, and trainer David Vandyke has suggested she will be even better over 1600m.
Historically the Champagne Stakes has been an excellent race for favourites and the punters' elect has saluted in the 17 of the past 30 editions of the race, but it should be noted that a number of odds-on favourites have been unable to get the job done.
Pierro, Dance Hero, Encounter and Triscay all won the race as odds-on favourites, but horses as talented as Comely Girl, Reganza, Octagonal, Camarilla, Sebring and Manhattan Rain were all beaten, which suggests Yankee Rose might be a risk at her current price.
The All Aged Stakes is the other Group 1 on the card and it is a far more open betting affair, with Press Statement a narrow favourite from English, Malaguerra, Black Heart Bart and Kermadec.
Favourites dominated the All Aged Stakes in the early 2000s and seven favourites won from 2004 to 2013, but that has shifted since the advent of The Championships and Rebel Dane and Chautauqua have both been beaten as favourites in the past two years.
Punters will need to take caution before they launch into a Yankee Rose/Press Statement double, but it is still expected to be a very popular combination this weekend.
