Teen refused bail on two sexual assault charges

A YAMBA teenager, charged with two sexual assaults, was refused bail at Grafton Children's Court yesterday.

The male who is 17 and thus cannot be named, was arrested in Yamba on Sunday night and charged with sexual assault and aggravated break and enter over two incidents in Yamba.

During the early hours of Sunday December 23, a 20-year-old woman was walking home on Yamba Rd with a male acquaintance.

It is alleged the 17-year-old male punched her to the face and sexually assaulted her.

As a result of the assault the woman received bruising and swelling to her face.

The woman returned home, however she did not report the incident to police until January 2.

The second incident occurred about 2.15am on New Year's Day.

A 21-year-old woman was asleep in her bedroom in High St, Yamba, when she was woken by footsteps and a male appeared in her bedroom.

It's alleged he punched her several times to the face before she was able to scream and escape through the bedroom window.

A number of witnesses attended the house after hearing her calls for help and noticed a man leave through the back door.

The woman was eventually located and taken to hospital where she was treated for facial injuries.

Following an investigation by police attached to Coffs-Clarence Local Area Command, the 17-year-old was arrested at his home in Yamba about 5.40pm on Sunday.

He was taken to Grafton Police Station and charged with aggravated sexual assault and with aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence.

He was also charged with two counts of breach of bail.

He was refused bail when he appeared in Grafton Children's Court yesterday.

He is due to appear at Maclean Children's Court tomorrow.
