Wright straight into the deep end

OWEN WRIGHT made the perfect start to his debut on the WCT circuit by winning his first-round heat at Snapper Rocks on Saturday.

Surfing against world No 15 Fredrick Patacchia of Hawaii and No 31 Patrick Gadauskas of the United States, Wright produced a two-wave total of 14.10 to pave a route straight to the third round.

Fellow tour rookie Adam Melling also made a strong start to his tour debut, scoring 11.3 to edge past fellow Aussie Dean Morrison and into the second round.

Brazilian Jadson Andre was the winner of Melling’s heat with 14.94 – the third best total of the day behind Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning.

While the two Lennox Head surfers progressed, results were not as kind to Byron Bay representatives Kieren Perrow and Garret Parkes, who were eliminated.

World No 14 Perrow had a day to forget, bowing out with a score of 9.4 as Aussies Daniel Ross and Luke Munro progressed.

And Parkes, surfing in his first WCT event as a wildcard, fell just short of advancement with a two-wave score of 10.77 to trail Fanning (17.36) and another Aussie, Tathra’s Kai Otton (11.53).

Tsunami warnings halted competition before it could get under way yesterday.

Fifteen-year-old wildcard Tyler Wright is yet to surf in the women’s draw.
