Wright on track in Auckland

DEFENDING Champion Tyler Wright is on track to retain her ISA World Junior Surfing Championships title after cruising through the opening rounds at Piha Beach, New Zealand over the weekend.

Lennox Head’s Wright became the youngest ever girl to win the title in Ecuador last year – at the age of 15 – and she is in great knick as she searches for back-to-back titles in Auckland.

In four- six-feet waves, Wright stepped up her defence in style, carving out the highest individual wave score (8.5) as well as the highest two-wave total (14) on the opening day.

In the best heat of the day, Wright finished second to American Courtney Conlogue by the barest of margins (0.75) in a tense round two match-up; both will progress to the next stage.

“I am very happy with the result,” Wright said.

“There were some fun waves coming through, I had to wait for a good one but it finally came and I got the score.”

The championships continue today.
