Wright is on target in Brazil

LENNOX HEAD’S Owen Wright is leading the Northern Rivers charge at the third leg of surfing’s World Championship Tour in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The goofy-footer shot straight through to the third round with a first-up win over Aussie Chris Davidson and American Brett Simpson in choppy one-metre conditions.

On his first world tour the 20-year-old will be looking to advance to the round of 16 for the first time – a quest which continues with his next match-up against world No 6 Bede Durbidge.

Byron Bay veteran Kieren Perrow has also gained a round-three match-up after surfing through the repechage.

Perrow defeated Gold Coaster Jay Thompson and now has a date with the man they call ‘Spartan’, Tahiti’s Michel Bourez.

Tour debutant Adam Melling was an early casualty in Brazil, going out in straight sets for the third event in succession.

Officials called a lay-day yesterday with no surf but action is likely to be up and running again today.
