World Wide narrows the gap to win

SUNSHINE Coast retiree John Gardner lauded trainer Bede Murray’s integrity after World Wide won yesterday‘s $40,000 Tursa Employment & Training Grafton Guineas (1600m) at Grafton.

Ridden by Melbourne Cup-winning jockey, Blake Shinn, World Wide made it three wins in succession with a half-length win.

Starting at $3.30, the three-year-old beat fast finishing favourite, Brave The Way ($3), with Beaveroo ($19) 1-¼ lengths away third.

“I used to race horses with Bede a few years back and he always said he’d ring if he had something good enough for me to go into,” Gardner said.

“Sure enough, he rang a while back and said he had a couple I might want to go into.

“I’m glad he stuck to his word. World Wide looks pretty good.”

Gardner races the son of Murray’s former star galloper Universal Prince with Melinda Black and the Murray Livestock Syndicate.

“I like this horse, like him a lot,” 75-year-old Murray said.

“I think he’s pretty handy.

“And he’s going to be even better in 12 months. He’s still a bit immature, yet to fill right out and get stronger.

“He’s easy to handle at home, a lovely horse. His race-day manners, mentally, have just got to improve a bit.

“Blake and I are of the same opinion. He’ll get up to 2000 metres, maybe even further.”

It was a gem ride by Shinn and the second winner for the stable-jockey combination after See The Universe scored earlier.

Universal Sound was beaten a nose by Sir Lago.

“A nose away from a treble, ah well,” Murray bemoaned.

“Two winners is better than none, especially at carnival time.”

World Wide is out of See The Stars.

“She (the dam) has been great,” Murray said.

“She foaled Kenny’s World then Hangover Henry (racing in Brisbane) then this horse (World Wide).

“Her last foal was a full brother to World Wide.”

Shinn had World Wide parked behind the lead in running.

“Barrier one helps and I knew I was on the best horse,” Shinn added.

“It makes my job easier.

“This is a progressive horse but not there mentally yet.

“He had the race won on the home turn, got a good turn of foot and can stick (stay) a bit. That’s a pretty good combination.”

World Wide will now spell with the Melbourne spring carnival under consideration.
