World falling short on Paris goals

THE world is not on track to achieve temperature goals set in the landmark Paris climate change agreement, the United Nations says. The agreement came into effect yesterday with Pacific island nations at risk of rising seas kicking off the rolling start. Australia has signed the agreement, but is not legally bound by it until it is ratified by Parliament. The UN said greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 would be 12-14 billion tonnes over what would be needed to keep global warming to the internationally agreed target of two degrees this century.
