Byron High athlete to represent Australia in Israel

BYRON Bay High School student Marlie Campton has been selected in the Australian team to compete in the 2014 World Schools Cross-Country Championship.

Marlie, 15, competed in a higher age division and will travel to Northern Israel in March.

"It's a very exciting and daunting task ahead," her mother Jannine Campton said.

"A lot of hard work has gone into this and the whole family is excited.

"Marlie had to get in the right headspace and was confident she could do it."

Marlie finished sixth out of 100 runners who competed in the under-18 4km run at the Australian Championships.

She placed third in the under-16s and is now awaiting for her Australian uniform to arrive at her home in Binna Burra.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Jannine said.

"It will be a 3km race at worlds and that will really suit her.

"The 4km event was a bit of a stretch and she nearly fell over the line."

The distance-runner has elected not to compete in the 800m and 1500m track events at the Australian All-Schools titles in December.

"You just can't do everything and she needs a bit of a break," Jannine said.

"That will give her a chance to get over some niggling injuries before she gets back into training."

Marlie trains with Brian Chapman at the Tweed Border Striders Club.

She is one of three competitors from the club who qualified for the World Championships.

Marlie has started fundraising and working part time to help with travel expenses.
