Workers Sports women bowlers survive the tough times
LISMORE Workers Sports women's bowling club at Goonellabah celebrated its 45th anniversary with a gala day yesterday.
They played a mixed game with the men's bowling club and have steadily built back their numbers over the past decade.
"We have 27 ladies in the club now and some of the original ones are here today,” event organiser Rae Moss said.
"They were down to about five (women) members 11 years ago and we've had to build it back up again.
"We haven't got enough members so the men play with the ladies and we play with the men tomorrow.
"It's a slow (recruitment) process and we're all getting a bit older.
"It's a credit to all the players that we've kept it going.”
Elizabeth McDonnell, 89, has been there since the beginning and still bowls regularly.
She was joined by long-time members Jean Daley and Mary Wunsch, among others.
The club was originally at the RSL in Lismore and survived floods in the 1970s before eventually moving to Goonellabah 20 years ago.
"It was about to fold when we got to five but we slowly started getting a few more one by one,” McDonnell said.
"I'm very happy to have been part of it for so long.”
