Workers shut Norths down to secure grand final spot

WORKERS dominated Norths in FNC Major League Baseball action to secure a grand final berth.

Game one of the best-of-three series saw Workers put in a total team effort to topple Norths six runs to one. Workers tallied up 13 hits while committing one error, resulting in Norths' only run.

Standout batters for Workers were Jason Caught, Mick McClelland and Trent Clark, who both notched up two hits from four at bats.

Defensively Mick McClelland at third base, Scott McClelland at first and Caught in centerfield made some outstanding plays to shut Norths down. Troy Pruess pitched a great game and in 8.1 innings gave up 10 hits, struck out two and allowed five walks.

Norths' batters hit the ball solidly but could not capitalise on these hits leaving numerous runners on base. The best batters for Norths were Jason Britt, with 2 hits from 3 at bats, and was backed up by Matt Hill, Danny O'Sullivan and Paul Simes all notching up 2 hits from 4 at bats.

Game two saw Workers put in another great team effort, defeating Norths 11 runs to one.

Norths again could not bunch hits together. The combination of good pitching from Mick McClelland and a tight defensively display by Workers restricted Norths to one run.

Norths could only manage six scattered hits with the best with the bat being Paul Simes who notched up two hits. Workers committed only one error with the best player being Jason Caught, taking 6 catches at centerfield.

The game was tight with Workers leading two runs to one until the seventh and eighth innings where they broke the game open with nine runs crossing the plate including a three run home run from Dallas Knapp over the leftfield fence.

Troy Pruess was the best with bat for Workers, grabbing four hits. He was supported by Knapp and Caught, both notching up three hits each.

The standout player of the series was Workers player Jason Caught who batted .600 (6 hits from 10 at bats) while playing centre field took nine catches, two of which were outstanding.

In other grades, Easts and Norths fought a see-sawing game in the under-20s which Easts grabbed the win in the last innings 9 runs to 8.

Division One saw another hard fought game between Norths and Workers, with Norths running out narrow winners 8 runs to 7.

In Division Two, Brothers toppled Workers, while in Division Three Ballina defeated Easts.
