Nightingales on song
WORKERS Nightingales ran out 23-10 winners over Goonellabah Meteors in the FNC Mixed B division softball grand final.
The game was level-pegging up until the fourth innings but in the fifth and final innings errors plagued the Meteors field and a home run to Josh Mortimer stole the game for Nightingales.
Meteors put up a good show with Mark Grace hitting two home runs and Myles White one.
In the Under-18s, Workers Mighty Ducks had a lucky 5-3 win over Dodgers Colts.
It came down to a struggle between pitchers Mitchell Dowse (Workers) and Andrew Kelly (Dodgers). Dowse had 11 strike-outs and Kelly six.
Colts scored three runs early before an Adam McGowen hit and aggressive base running from Cocciola put Ducks on the board.
Ducks put up a batting rally led by Tom Wade, Dowse and Cocciola, adding four runs to lead by two before Kurtis Wyatt shut down the innings with a brilliant catch.
Colts failed to convert in the fourth, with the score remaining 5-3 in favour of Ducks.
Dodgers Braves took the Under-15s in a close one over club rivals Dodgers Lakers 9-5.
Hayden Watt had a great pitching game for Braves with seven strike-outs. Connor Jackson, Tim Gordon and Will Riley were consistent with the bat for Braves.
Lakers’ Luke Virtue at centrefield and Mel Bull at second base did best in the field, while Jess Riley and Sam Osborne were the pick of the batters.
In the Under-13s, Dodgers Allstars proved too hot for Dodgers Mustangs 10-5. Mustangs kept it close until the last innings when Allstars forged ahead.
Pitchers Shane Groth (Mustangs) and Nick Winkler-Maloney (Allstars) did an exceptional job.
Jordan Lampard stood out with the bat and in the field.
