Work for the Dole scheme gets a $5b boost

COWPER MP Luke Hartsuyker has defended the Federal Government's radical overhaul of the work-for-the-dole program.

As the Assistant Minister for Employment, Mr Hartsuyker said the Government will invest $5.1 billion over three years from 2015-16 to reinvigorate employment services for the benefit of job seekers and employers.

The new job placement program, to begin on July 1, 2015, will require job seekers to look for 40 jobs a month and perform up to 25 hours of community service.

Under the Abbott government's expanded work for the dole plans, unemployed people aged up to 49 will have to perform some work for jobless payments.

Job seekers younger than 30 would have to work 25 hours a week under the expanded program, while those between 30 and 49 will be asked to do 15 hours' work a week.

Those aged 50-60 will undertake 15 hours a week of an approved activity, such as training.

Mr Hartsuyker said the model included a new mix of incentives, services and payments to drive stronger performance.   "Mutual obligation requirements have been simplified and extended to ensure more job seekers remain active and engaged while looking for work," Mr Hartsuyker said.

"Most job seekers will be required to look for up to 40 jobs per month, and most job seekers under 50 years of age will be required to participate in Work for the Dole for either 15 or 25 hours per week for six months each year, depending on their age.

"A new Work for the Dole Coordinator will be created in each employment region to source places for participants, and to work with host organisations and providers."
