Work being done on Lismore's Union St Bridge

COLEMANS Bridge at South Lismore has picked up a web of scaffolding - but Lismore MP Thomas George says there's nothing to worry about.

Mr George said the bridge was due from some maintenance work and was being given a thorough inspection to help plan for future maintenance.

"Scaffolding is being installed around the bridge on Union Street for investigations under and on the side of the bridge," Mr George said.

"The scaffolding will also be used for the maintenance work being planned to be carried out underneath the bridge.

"Once the scaffolding is in place and investigations are complete, maintenance can start.

"Maintenance work is expected to start by June this year."

Mr George said it was expected to take about two weeks just to get all the scaffolding up - assuming it doesn't start pouring rain again.

For the next fortnight, while the scaffolding was being put up, the speed limit on the bridge would be cut to 40km/h and one of the bridge's pedestrian paths would be closed.

Mr George said motorists would generally find it easier to detour via the Ballina Street Bridge until scaffolding was up.

You will be able to keep tabs on the work by going to the government's Live Traffic NSW website. (At present the road works are not yet listed on the site).
