Wood shows mettle to claim finals berth
LENNOX Head surfer James Wood has earned the right to compete in the individual section of the $15,000 Jim Beam Surftag finals at Duranbah, Tweed Heads.
Wood picked up the surfer of the day award representing the Lennox-Ballina Boardriders at the Far North Coast qualifying round at North Wall, Ballina at the weekend.
He will compete for an extra $500 and additional prize pack as Le-Ba look to take out the national final after winning the FNC qualifier
The 27-year-old has been one of the most consistent surfers for Le-Ba in team events in recent years.
"If you haven't surfed in a tag event for a year so it can take a while to get used to it again," Wood said.
"You can't put too much pressure on yourself because that's when you fall.
"It was good to get a win at home and there's a heap of other clubs that have some really good teams."
The speciality event will put him against the top surfers from the five other qualifying events.
It will be a 15-minute heat with each surfer only allowed to catch one wave.
The surftag finals will be held over three days from March 27.
Byron Bay Boardriders finished second in the FNC qualifier have also made it to the final stage of the competition.
World Qualifying Series Garrett Parkes was a standout for Byron and is looking forward to the final.
"I reckon we've got the team that could win it up there," Parkes said.
"It's $15,000 and a seven-day boat trip on the line so we'll definitely be taking it serious."
