Women's long and proud tradition in bowls

IN the 10 years to December 1968, the number of women playing bowls in Australia more than doubled - from 51,000 to 109,731.

In those same 10 years the number of NSW bowls clubs soared from 326 to 610 and the number of their women bowlers from 17,000 to 45,902.

Australia had 1778 women's bowls clubs at the time.

The women also had the world's oldest - it was at South Melbourne Cricket Club and was formed in 1899.
