Women's event gets Laotian guest

THE Northern Rivers' biggest International Women's Day event is about to kick off in Ballina.

Rassanikone (Nikone) Nanong - who runs Nikone Handicrafts in Laos - has been flown to the region by the UN's Women Australia committee for a lunch hosted by the Ballina Chamber of Commerce at the Ballina RSL from 12pm today.

Her social enterprise business now employs 50 weavers, dyers, office staff and showroom assistants on site and 70 weavers in the villages.

Our reporter Rebecca Lollback will be at the lunch and tweeting highlights from Nikone's speech. Follow her @rebeccalollback.
