Virginia robbed of vision, but not determination

VIRGINIA Bernard is a lady who has had to adjust to life a little differently after she was robbed of the gift of sight.

Her life was changed forever when a tragic incident left her blind when she was only four months old.

Growing up, she had to adjust to this way of life and learn how to familiarise herself with her surroundings in a different way.

But the 22-year-old woman is determined not to let her disability control her life.

Earlier this year, Miss Bernard took her first step to independence by moving out of her mother's home and into a flat of her own in Forest Lake.

Now she is looking for the next step in her new-found freedom by trying to find a job in the south-west area.

"I would like to find a job in administration," Miss Bernard said.

"I have been doing work experience at Vision Australia on their front desk for the past nine months, and I love it."

Miss Bernard believes she has all the right skills any employer would look for.

"I am very punctual and I work hard," she said.

"I am good on the phone and I have good computer skills."

Her mother, Mareesa Bernard, is hoping local businesses can help her daughter's dream come true.

"Virginia is a hard worker and will be a great addition to any workplace. She can do her work by using special computer programs which help her access emails and the internet," she said.

To help Virginia, phone the Inala Red Cross Employment Service on 33721053.
