Woman stabbed with scissors at New Year's Eve doof party

A THREE-day illegal doof party held at Wyan, south-west of Casino, over the new year has left a bitter taste in the mouths of residents of the usually quiet surrounding rural communities.

A 21-year-old woman was reportedly stabbed with scissors at the dance party, which was held December 31-January 2 on private property adjoining the Royal Camp State Forest.

Residents as far afield as Rappville, Leeville, Mongogarie, Hogarth Range and Shannonbrook said they could hear the music from the dance party particularly at night and during the early morning.

Unconfirmed reports put as many as 2000 people at the dance party over the three days.

Duty officer for Casino police, Acting Inspector Wayne Crotty, confirmed that as well as investigating the alleged assault of the young woman, police attended the dance party twice in the course of the three days in response to noise complaints.

The 21-year-old was allegedly stabbed in the shoulder on New Year's Eve.

There was at least one accident on Busbys Flat Rd during the event.

A car crashed into a fence around a home and the driver sped off before the homeowner could raise the alarm.

It is understood no one was injured but the furious homeowner was left with the bill to repair a timber paling fence partly destroyed as a result of the crash.

A spokeswoman for Richmond Valley Council said the council did not receive a development application for the doof party and had only become aware of it after complaints by residents.

She said council officers went to the property to talk with the property owner and party organisers after receiving the complaints and under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, requested the music be turned down.

"Council does not condone wilful breaches of its planning laws or other governing policies, such as the Protection of the Environment Operations Act, and will exercise its discretion to take enforcement action, if it is considered expedient to do so."
