Woman severely burnt in Ballina home fire

A 67-year old woman was taken to Sydney on Saturday night after suffering severe burns in a house fire at Skinner Street in Ballina.

At 5.45 on Saturday afternoon emergency services were called to the home where a one-room fire was brought under control.

An elderly women suffered burns to the front of her body and was placed in an induced coma before being transported by air to the Royal North Shore burns unit in Sydney.

On Sunday local Police cordoned off the area as a crime scene and detectives inspected the site.

After preliminary investigations Police said the fire did not appear suspicious.

Two units of the Ballina Fire Brigade responded to the 5.45 emergency calls and were on site by 5.57pm, a spokesperson said.

First on the scene were police officers who attacked the fire using an extinguisher.

Neighbours were also quick to respond and helped to get the fire under control, the spokesperson said.
