Woman raped while she slept beside partner at camp

A NEW Zealand man will be deported after serving a year in jail over the "brazen" and terrifying rape of a woman while she slept beside her partner at a remote Far North campsite.

Weston Ellis Howell, 35, was among a group of about 30 people who went on a camping trip to the Jardine River National Park north of Weipa in April 2015.

The Cairns District Court heard a party kicked off at the isolated campsite on April 5 with a boozy fancy dress party, although the victim, who cannot be named to protect her identity, and her partner both went to bed quite early.

The court was told the woman awoke in her tent about 4am to find she was being sexually assaulted by an unknown person. She tried desperately to wake her partner before screaming and raising the alarm.

Defence barrister James Sheridan said his client likely consumed between 25-30 beers on the night of the party and also multiple cups of an alcoholic "punch" that had been mixed up in an Esky.
