Woman dies after being hit by car

BREAKING: A BALLINA woman who was hit by a car yesterday has died in hospital.

The woman, 70, was hit by a blue Toyota Corolla on Links Ave in East Ballina about 11am yesterday.

The car was being driven by an 18-year-old man, also of Ballina.

Witnesses told police the woman ran onto the road to help an animal and collided with the vehicle.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene but she died in Lismore Base Hospital last night.

Police said the driver returned a negative breath test at the scene, and he was taken to Ballina Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

He will be formally interviewed at a later stage.
