Woman escapes sinking vehicle after it plunges into pond

A WOMAN escaped a sinking vehicle after it plunged into a pond near Coffs Harbour this morning.

The female driver, aged in her early 20s, was able to crawl from the driver's seat into the rear of the hatchback as the car filled with water.

She climbed out of the rear passenger's door and was able to keep her head above water until help arrived.

A male motorist who stopped after seeing the accident waded out into the water and helped the woman from the car and up onto the bank.

Escaping relatively uninjured she was treated at the scene by paramedics for shock.

The accident happened after she lost control of the Toyota Corolla while driving along the Orara Way, towards Coffs Harbour, approximately 1km from Red Hill around 7am.

Police said it appears the vehicle veered onto the incorrect side of the road, left the roadway, clipped a tree and rolled several times before landing up-side-down in the pond.

Jess Kelly owns the property where the accident happened.

"I heard from my room, a few loud screeches then a bang, then I heard some trees crashing so I ran down here and saw a car partly submerged," Jess said.

"I think it was lucky the lady got out of the car very early.

"I ran down as quick as I could and tried to see if there was everyone else in the vehicle, there didn't appear to be so I went and called police.

By that stage he said the vehicle was submerged with only the rear bumper showing.

Police said it was a lucky outcome.

The woman was taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital for assessment.
