Wipeout for Byron surf fest

ORGANISERS of the Byron Bay Surf Festival have made the difficult decision to cancel this year's event.

Festival director Mike Jahn and co-founders Vanessa Thompson and James McMillan cited "regulatory municipal hurdles" as well as the lack of major sponsor as the main hurdles for the 2015 festival.

They said it was now "logistically and financially unviable".

Mr Jahn said arts and culture, including events such as the Byron Bay Surf Festival, should be "supported and encouraged, rather than suppressed".

"We encourage the community to come forward with any major funding contacts and investors that may see the benefit of sustaining this unique event for many years," he said.

Anyone who would like to sponsor next year's event can email byronbaysurffestival@gmail.com.
