Win lifts Hornets in busy week

GOONELLABAH has moved to the top of Pool B in Football FNC Tursa Anzac Cup soccer with a 3-0 home win over Lismore Thistles on Tuesday night.

The Hornets were missing several regulars and were also backing up from a 4-2 loss to Byron Bay two days before, but showed plenty of resolve to withstand a strong start from a mobile Thistles outfit and earn their first win of the season.

A powerful first-time hit from utility player Shaun Dronfield gave Goonellabah the only goal of the first half, before the Hornets wrapped up a confidence-boosting win with further goals from Kale Hopper and Sam Ireland after the break.

To cap a hectic week, Goonellabah is now preparing for their trip to Coffs Harbour to take on Norths United on Saturday in the inaugural Northern NSW Solo Cup.
