Win keeps Firebirds flying

THE Queensland Firebirds ensured two things with a big win in round seven of the trans-Tasman netball competition in Brisbane on Monday night.

The 64-48 triumph over the Canterbury Tactix kept the Kiwis winless on Australian soil - more importantly, it kept the Queenslanders in the hunt to win back-to-back premierships.

Sharpshooters Romelda Aiken and Natalie Medhurst ensured that.

Aiken scored 38 goals from 43 shots against the bottom-of-the-ladder Tactix while Medhurst finished with an impressive 26 goals from 29 shots.

The win means the Queenslanders have now won three games this season, including the last two, and are now fifth, just two points outside the top-four.

Aiken said the key to the win was a fantastic effort from all the team.

"Everything just seemed to work well on court tonight across all thirds," the Jamaican star said.

"Nat (Medhurst) and Loz (captain Lauren Nourse) were getting some really good feeds into me in the circle, while at the other end the defenders were working hard against the Tactix shooters."

The Firebirds head across this Tasman this week to play the Southern Steel in Invercargill on Sunday.
