FORMER Wollongbar-Alstonville rugby union tight-head prop Steve Williams has helped Germany win their division of the European Nations Cup.

Williams notched up his third international cap in Germany's 27-17 over the Netherlands in Amsterdam at the weekend to secure their place atop the Division 2A table.

The win follows a grafting 13-5 victory over Ukraine in Germany last week and will almost certainly see them promoted to the competition's first tier which includes Romania and Georgia - both World Cup qualifiers from last year.

Belgium and Moldova are a win each behind with a match in hand, but Germany has a far superior for-and-against record.

Williams made international headlines last November when he was plucked from backpacking obscurity to make his international debut against Moldova.

The former NSW Country age-group representative qualified for the national team, whose world ranking is steady at 25, through his German-born mother.

In further rugby news, former Wallaby Mark Ella will be speaking at a luncheon to raise funds for Far North Coast Junior Rugby at Southern Cross University today.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased from FNC Rugby on 6622 4337.
