Why there’s so much variation in CQ fuel prices

Motorists that seek out low fuel prices and reward service stations with their business are helping to drive down prices in Gladstone.

According to RACQ, the latest average unleaded petrol price in the city was 97.8 cents per litre compared to 110.6c in Rockhampton and 111.8c in Mackay.

Spokeswoman Renee Smith said greater competition in Gladstone was helping to drive down prices.

"Competition requires two factors: fuel companies need to offer lower prices in an attempt to drive volume and motorists need to seek out and reward the cheaper retailers," she said.

"If fuel companies choose not to compete and motorists shop primarily on convenience rather than price, unfortunately we see less competition and higher prices."

She said that regional Queensland did not operate on a price cycle like the southeast of the state and advised those travelling for essential purposes to use comparison services such as RACQ's Fuel Finder.

One of the people benefiting from cheaper prices is director of KJP Haulage Kirk Porter.

The Gladstone company does most of its work in the resources sector, and while lower diesel prices help with monthly expenses, Mr Porter said a reduced workload limited the opportunity to take advantage.

He hasn't had to put any drivers off, and said lower prices enabled him to mitigate running costs.

"We're doing our best to keep everyone on the books," he said.

He sold off some equipment in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic and said it was his intention to survive as a business.

Oil prices are down because of a massive drop in demand and a price war between major suppliers Saudi Arabia and Russia, according to RACQ.

Today the cheapest unleaded petrol in Gladstone was at Freedom Fuels on Toolooa Street (87.8 cents) according to the Fuel Finder website.
