Whopping cough vaccines available

NORTHERN Rivers residents are still able to get free whooping cough vaccines if they move quickly.

NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner several months ago announced the vaccinations would be free at least until December as the health service tried to tackle the region's whooping cough epidemic.

The Northern NSW Local Health District was unable to say today whether a date had been set for the end of the free period.

However, through a spokesman the service's public health director, Dr Paul Corben, confirmed the vaccine remained free for now.

Dr Corben urged anyone not already immunised against whooping cough - or who had not had their immunisation updated - to see their GP to get the vaccine.
