Whale season has begun in the Whitsundays

CRUISE Whitsundays passengers returning from the Great Barrier Reef saw more than the afternoon sunset with the arrival of the first whales of the season.

Public relations manager Nikkie Mewing said the arrival of the whales on Monday was an exciting time for both tourists and residents.

"The whale season provides an added bonus for tourists visiting the Whitsunday region, with the possibility they may be lucky to see a mother and calf or even some playful breaching," she said.

"Cruise Whitsundays guests can expect to start seeing these gentle giants more frequently on cruises to the Great Barrier Reef and among the Whitsunday islands where the calm protected waters offer a shelter for the mothers and calves.

  • Whales visit the Whitsundays every year on their annual migration north during the winter months.
  • From June to September, whales are a common sight frolicking among the islands and even occasionally out on the Great Barrier Reef.
  • They choose the Whitsundays to give birth to their calves, choosing the warm, calm, protected waters of the Whitsundays as in ideal nursery.
