West Ballina man pleads guilty to child pornography charges

A WEST Ballina man who had more than 34,000 child pornography images and more than 700 videos on his computer will be sentenced in the District Court after pleading guilty to six charges.

Christopher Coorey was arrested at his home on March 3 after communicating with police officers online and sharing child pornography images using a private file sharing program.

The 58-year-old was charged with 10 counts of using a carriage service to publish child pornography and one count of possessing child abuse material.

He was refused bail and remanded in custody at Sydney's Parklea prison.

Coorey appeared in Lismore Local Court on Tuesday via video link and was represented by his solicitor Kylie Anderson-Clarke.

Police facts tendered before the court showed Coorey spoke to a Western Australian police officer online in April 2014 and shared more than 700 photos of young naked males with the officer.

He told the officer his interest was 'almost anything nine to 16 year boys,' police facts stated.

The facts showed police found 34,350 child pornography photos and 784 videos on Coorey's computer.

Then in July 2014 Coorey spoke to a Queensland police officer online and shared a video with the officer.

Ms Anderson-Clarke told the court after discussions with Mr Christey of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions office, matters relating to the charges had been resolved.

She entered guilty pleas on behalf of Coorey to five counts of using a carriage service to publish child pornography and one count of possessing child abuse material.

Mr Christey then withdrew five charges of using a carriage service to publish child pornography.

Ms Anderson-Clarke did not apply for Coorey's bail which was formally refused.

Magistrate David Heilpern committed Coorey to be sentenced in the Lismore District Court in late November.

Mr Heilpern ordered a background and sentencing report on Coorey to be prepared by Corrective Services before his sentencing date.
