INITIAL: IT'S the third day of very high temperatures across the Northern Rivers and today is forecast to be the most extreme.
Thanks to a a slow-moving high pressure system over New Zealand which is extending a ridge towards southeast Queensland there has been plenty of dry and very hot air from central Australia into New South Wales, leading to heatwave conditions.
These hot conditions will generally peak today as the front moves into New South Wales, bringing this very hot airmass right to the coast.
A southerly change is expected later in the day which will bring the cool change we will all be hoping for.
There is also a very high fire danger for the Northern Rivers.
Forecast maximum temperatures
Ballina - 31 degrees
Byron Bay - 27 degrees becoming windy
Evans Head - 33 degrees
Lismore - 36 degrees
