OPINION: We can all be gaily wed

FEDERAL Opposition Leader Bill Shorten made his mark last week by introducing the Same-Sex Marriage Bill that proposes changing the words "man and woman" to "two people".

So all you out there who agreed with Senator Cory Bernardi's 2012 assertions that gay marriage would lead to bestiality can now draw a big sigh of relief. No, your creepy Uncle Stan can't wed his labradoodle - but there's nothing stopping him from proposing. Eww.

I still, for the life of me, cannot understand why the gay marriage issue is so contentious. Last week, among other local anti-gay stories, wedding businesses were even urged to break the law and refuse service to same-sex couples. The majority of dissenters seem to be Christians who apparently haven't read their bibles recently, for nowhere does it say which genders may or may not marry. They also forgot the bit about do unto others and any one of a dozen other suggestions for following a Christian lifestyle. The bible does, however, condemn divorce.

Despite that, a couple from Canberra made headlines after vowing to end their marriage if the bill is passed. Former ACT director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Nick Jensen and his wife of 10 years, Sarah, vowed to divorce and (according to that same bible) turn Sarah into an adulterer and their children into bastards, rather than let strangers tie the knot. They grabbed hold of the old adage "cutting off your nose to spite your face" and ran a mile with it.

How can a marriage between two committed, loving gay people be offensive compared to Geoffrey Edelstein's wedding last week to the pregnant Gabi Grecko.

What about the couple down the road that play the pokies and don't feed their kids. Or a man who beats his wife. Or your "normal" marriage - or mine.

Two years ago a lesbian couple moved next door to me after getting hitched in New York.

Since they bought their apartment, no-one has knocked on the doors of my heterosexual neighbours to say their marriages are null and void.

No-one has had their firstborn child seized by the God Police. The sky is still blue and the grass green. The birds still sing in our gardens, it still rains. It's made no difference to any of us - except to this gay couple that are deeply in love.

It's nobody's business but theirs.
