Bringing back Bennett at 64: Welcome to Wayne's world

RUGBY LEAGUE: Like many people, I feel for Broncos coach Anthony Griffin.

But the truth is Brisbane has lost its aura and its ability to lure marquee players to Red Hill since Wayne Bennett walked in 2008.

They can still pull big crowds and win the television ratings, but on the field the team is far from the feared force it once was.

It finished eighth and 12th in the last two seasons, and is facing a salary cap investigation.

Many will question the wisdom of bringing Bennett back at 64, claiming he has lost touch with the speed of the modern game under its new rules.

Clearly the Broncos board disagrees.

They see Bennett as the man to turn the club around to restore it to a position of power on and off the field.

This is about more than just winning premierships.

COULD GRIFFIN PULL OFF A WIN AS SEND-OFF?

Star players like Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston and more recently Daly Cherry-Evans have been on the club's radar, but have declined approaches, something that rarely happened under Bennett's reign.

The big question is: what will be the fallout?

Chief executive Paul White has scoffed at reports he'll follow Griffin out the door, "because he can't work with Bennett.

Kevin Walters, who Bennett sacked a month ago and Darren Lockyer have both been linked to a joint coaching role, and there is already speculation football manager Andrew Gee may return after walking out on the club earlier this year over the salary cap issue.

Talk has also suggested Knights fullback Darius Boyd could return, although he is understood to have done a deal with Canberra.

Bennett's door will also be open to the likes of Karmichael Hunt (AFL) and Israel Folau (rugby union).

Welcome to Wayne's World, 2015.
