Waving the flag for Byron Bay

BYRON BAY surfer Kirsten Ogden was in blistering form in the first heat of the 16 and under girls category of the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp on the Gold Coast yesterday.

The 14-year-old scored a 6.50 (out of a possible 10) for a combination of critical back-side manoeuvres in the punchy, three foot conditions.

Ogden impressed the judges and advanced to the next round of competition with a combined heat total of 10.73 (out of a possible 20).

“I had a lot of fun out there, I’m used to that sort of wave, I surf the beachies down near Byron Bay a lot, so it felt really comfortable,” said Ogden.

“It always feels good to get the first heat out of the way and to come out on top is even better.”
