Waterslide gets 15 minutes of fame
ON the face of it, it's hard to work out what a crazed hitchhiker and a philandering politician have to do with the Ballina waterslide, but we're soon about to find out.
The 30-year old waterslide will soon feature in a new movie starring Aussie actor Toni Collette and Liev Schreiber (Salt, X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
The movie, titled Mental, stars Shaz (Collette), a hot-headed hitchhiker asked to nanny five girls by their father, a sleazy politician, after he hospitalises his wife for a nervous breakdown.
Lee Fitzgerald, who manages the waterslide with wife Vicki, said he was looking forward to the crew making use of his site for two days from August 29.
“It'll be good fun,” he said.
Mr Fitzgerald said the plan was for a cameraman and actor – unknown at this stage – to head down the yellow slide.
Given the yellow slide's steep initial decent and notorious s-bend, Mr Fitzgerald said it could require a few takes to get the right shot.
“The camera will be going first, so anything could happen,” he said.
Mr Fitzgerald said the Ballina slide got the nod for the flick thanks to its location and retro style.
“They wanted one close to the water and from the '80s,” he said.
While it is not yet known which actors will make the trip to Ballina for the shoot – the film also stars Anthony LaPaglia and Rebecca Gibney – whoever turns up should give the waterslide a boost in the profile stakes.
“She'll be famous,” Mr Fitzgerald said.
