IT'S known as the murder that broke Lismore's heart, and 12 years on, the wounds are still festering.

The person who took the life of 25-year-old backpacker Simone Strobel on the night of February 11, 2005, has never been charged, leaving her German family grieving and unable to find closure.

Tomorrow's Weekend Star will feature comments from the Strobels, who have bravely spoken out to the media on the anniversary of her death.

In  the meantime, The Northern Star photographer Marc Stapelberg has prepared this special video reflecting on what we know about this unsolved mystery.
