Warwick cattle stud continues investment in quality genetics
ASCOT Cattle Company, Warwick has again invested in quality genetics when it recently purchased the top-priced bull at the Paringa Livestock's annual autumn sale in Yea, Victoria.
Paringa Livestock is an elite genetic supplier of bulls to Australian beef producers.
The family-owned business offers, with charolais, red and black angus breeds, with red angus and charolais in the top 5% for most traits.
Ascot Cattle Company operates Ascot Charolais and Angus stud at North Toolburra, Warwick, and stud principals Jim Wedge and Jackie Chard paid $11,000 for 18-month-old sire Paringa Free Lunch K330.
The son of VIP Free Lunch, the top-priced bull had impressive credentials, with an eye muscle area EBV of +2.1, rib and rump fat of +1.0 and +1.5, and a 600-day weight of +48.
Mr Wedge believes their recent purchase will be a valuable addition to Ascot's breeding program.
"The bull we purchased has carcase traits among the top 1-5% of the breed in Australia," he said.
"His growth rate, calving ease and positive fat traits are very impressive, as he weighs 820kg at just 18months old.
"His extreme fleshing ability also attracted me to him, as he has a hell of a lot of meat."
Mr Wedge said the new bull would be used as a back-up sire in their artificial insemination program on their New England property "Khancobin", where they run a large heifer portion.
He said they had purchased a Paringa sire in the past, as well as many elite females, which they used in their embryo transfer program about five years ago.
"A large part of our herd is based on the Paringa bloodlines, as we want to improve the traits in our charolais for eating quality and finishing ability," MrWedge said.
"Our new sire is an outcross to a lot of the females in the Ascot herd at present," he said.
"Paringa are one of the better herds in Australia for their data recording."
