Warrior Within walks away with win

A CROWD of nearly 2000 made their way to Murwillumbah racecourse yesterday to witness Warrior Within ($4.40) teach his rivals a stunning lesson in the $28,000 Casella Wines Murwillumbah Cup (2000m).

After sitting patiently midfield one off the rails for most of the journey, jockey Paul Hammersley took off four wide on the Warrior at the 600m mark, straightening level with the leaders.

A cakewalk ensued as a five-and-a-half-length margin opened up on the way to the line, with Run For Layla ($4.80) and Walpersdorf ($9.00) finishing runners-up, a head the distance between them. Beartracker ($13.00) finished a further head away in fourth position.

Warrior Within maintains his perfect record at Murwillumbah having also won last year’s Murwillumbah Cup Prelude, while his career earnings now approach $100,000.

Connections for the five-year-old King Cugat (USA) said they were expecting a good show from their charge, after a wide barrier had hampered his chances at his most recent outing in the Ipswich Cup.

His price on the tote came in few points as jump time neared but not enough to dislodge the firm favourite Santo De Lago ($3.00).

Unfortunately for his supporters he could manage to beat only three runners home and may have been hard pressed to produce his best at the 2000m cup distance.

Cup winning jockey, Paul Hammersley had already popped up in the winner’s circle, after he steered Naynay to victory in the WHK–Sky Racing Gold Murwillumbah Newmarket (1200m).
