Warm welcome over winter
IS THIS really winter or has summer come early?
No, you are not imagining it, says Ashleigh Wilson of the Bureau of Meteorology, it is a lot hotter than normal.
In fact the last time winter was this hot was in 2009 when the mercury rose to 36.7 degrees in Lismore.
Temperatures at Evans Head yesterday touched 29.8 degrees at 1.32pm, which she said was really high for a coastal town.
In Lismore the temperature was six degrees above average at 27.9 degrees. Ms Wilson attributed this bout of warm weather to the north- westerly air mass that is coming from inland, causing hot and dry conditions.
Lennox Head mum Ashley Moir didn't care what the reason was, she was too busy enjoying the beautiful sun with her three daughters, Ava, 6, Frankie, 4, and Peaches, 2.
"It's beautiful; it's surprising, as it normally has that cold chill to it," Ms Moir said.
"This is like summer.
"It feels like spring has come early, but sometimes it gets cold again, so I won't speak too fast and say spring is here.
"The children love it; it's nice and refreshing for all of us."
But winter is not quite over yet. Our BOM spokeswoman said temperatures will return to the lower 20s for the rest of the week.
"Cape Byron is expected to have a strong wind warning this morning with winds up to 30 knots before settling down in the afternoon.
