War of words follows 'air battle'

A WAR of words has erupted after China claimed Japanese fighter jets fired "jamming shells” as Chinese military aircraft flew between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean over waters linking Japan's Okinawa and Miyako islands. Japan has protested over the "groundless” accusations. Taiwan said four Chinese planes also flew over the nearby Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines. The waterways and airspace are part of the contested South China Sea. The jamming shells are decoy flares to draw away an incoming missile.
